In April 2023, the much-anticipated new Shake Shack opened its doors in Portland, Oregon. Over 900 sq. ft. of GlasPro Bird Safe UV glass helps prevent bird-window collisions while being highly-transparent to the human eye. Restaurant patrons enjoy an unobstructed view while seating indoors enjoying their burgers and fries.
In 2013, Portland adopted Resolution 37034 as part of the ENB 9.01 Green Building Policy. The Resolutions directs exploration of opportunities to advance bird-friendly building design and management practices into City plans, policies, and programs, including the Green Building Policy for City-owned facilities.
In 2018 Portland City Council voted on Central City 2035 plan and is implemented through the Central City Plan District in the Portland Zoning Code. The intent of the plan district is to address the unique role the Central City plays as the region’s premier center for jobs, health and human services, tourism, entertainment, and urban living. The Plan states, “Bird-safe exterior glazing requirements to incorporate bird-friendly design methods that reduce the transparency, or reflectivity, of exterior windows.”
Building requirement: New buildings (all façades with ≥30% glazing in the first 60 ft. from grade) and major renovations (all façades where ≥75% of the façade is altered and where the façade has ≥30% glazing in the first 60 ft. from grade). In these cases, ≥90% of windows and glazing must be bird friendly, using materials in the Portland Bird Safe Windows List.
